Jonah Hex Review

The running time for “Jonah Hex” is a brief 80 minutes, and normally that would be a problem. But director Jimmy Hayward lets it all zip by, stopping briefly for an edifying plot point before leaping back into rousing gunfire. Special commendations go to scripters Brian Taylor, William Farmer, and Mark Nevedine, who combine the western and mystical aspects of the character into a coherent and immensely entertaining movie. The opening animation scenes are visually modern with a western flair, a perfect tribute to the film’s DC Comics roots.

Jonah Hex isn’t a perfect film. but it’s a helluva lot of fun. Briskly paced, and chock full of pyrotechnic action, it’s the perfect antidote to this year’s summer blahs. Let Woody and his pals sit in the toy box, you’ll have way more fun riding with Jonah.

Jimmy Hayward (director) / William Farmer , Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor (screenplay)

Megan Fox … Lilah
Michael Fassbender … Burke
Will Arnett … Lieutenant Grass

Hollywood Movie Friendship Review

Friendship shifts focus to the other end of the spectrum, to concentrate on the comic and apparently true-life travails of two young Ossies who decide to head toward San Francisco in 1990 in search of freedom and real junk food.

In fact, the film's virtue is its vice. It always wants to be so intense and so headlong, that spirits must never flag (my God, let's not let this become a normal German movie, all serious and depressing), and the boys and the girl are wildly ecstatic about every experience they have, no matter how awful. We are treated to a constant stream of montages where the kids shout out the window of their speeding (and often careening) car to show us how free they feel in the USA. Their naivete about what's permitted in America and what isn't is astonishing, but without that naivete the film wouldn't work at all.

Nevertheless, there are some excellent comic sequences here and there that do work, and that lead one to think that Goller is a director to watch and that his next film will be much improved.

Hollywood Movie Splice Review

This hollywood movie set primarily in the antiseptic, dull green laboratory of the mad scientist couple Clive and Elsa , skilled geneticists who probably met while ditching bioethics class at grad school. In the service of a suitably menacing French pharmaceutical firm, they gleefully toil at the forefront of morally dubious research, combining the DNA of different creatures to create appalling new life forms from which their employer intends to extract the next generation of lucrative medications.

The fun abruptly stops for Clive and Elsa, however, when their corporate overseers decide to halt the life creating stage of their research and shift to the more tedious profit-extracting stage. But their God complexes compel them to disobey the decree, and they continue their experiments illicitly, eventually giving “birth” to Dren, a test tube Frankenstein’s monster containing bits of genetic code from virtually every species in the animal kingdom including good old homo sapiens.

At first a squealing, revolting tub of goo, Dren grows rapidly, developing humanoid features that cause Clive and Elsa to view her less as a science experiment and more as a pet, and then less as a pet and more as a daughter, and finally less as a daughter and more as disturbingly hot daughter.

A child can challenge the best of relationships, especially when the child is an unholy devil-spawn, and Dren brings out the worst in Clive and Elsa, neither of whom were the most well-adjusted folk to begin with. Soon a kind of creepy love triangle develops between the three, and it's at this point that the tone of Splice crosses the line from merely provocative and unsettling to “Holy sh*t, what the f**k was that?!?” disturbing.

Splice is clearly tailored to appeal to a certain audience specifically, those who delight in being made to squirm for the better part of two hours and in that sense it more than succeeds. Every detail of the film is crafted to elicit the maximum amount of discomfort, from the dreary hues of its color palette to its stomach-churning sound design, which emphasizes every cringeworthy squeal and squish and gurgle. But Splice is more cerebral than your typical torture porn trash, and its brand of horror is adept at stimulating more than just the gag reflex.

Jackie Chan Biography

The only child of Charles and Lee-Lee Chan, Jackie Chan was born Chan Kong-Sang on the 7th of April, 1954. The family lived in a mansion in the exclusive Victoria Peak district, not owned by them Charles worked as a cook for the French Ambassador, while Lee-Lee was the housekeeper. He was not academically bright which was noticed by Charles, who decided to enrol the boy, now 7, at the Peking Opera School, operated by Shu Master Yu Jan-Yuen.

Being part of the Chinese Opera Research School, Jackie learnt through ten years of nineteen hours a day the major discipline of the Peking Opera, which includes acting, singing, dance, mime, acrobatics and a variety of martial arts. After graduation he went to work at the Shaw Brothers Studios as a stuntman, where after two years he was promoted to stunt co-ordinator. Watching Jackie direct stunt men, a producer spotted his talents and gave him his first adult in Little Tiger from Canton (1971). After years of being paid minimally for his abilities, 1978?s Snake in the Eagle Shadow and Drunken Master gave Jackie the freedom to create the genre of kung fu comedy, which transformed the Hong Kong film industry. In 1980 Jackie directed his first film, The Young Master, with producer Raymond Chow. With his experience in American film making techniques, Jackie?s headed back home to improve Hong Kong cinema and this is evident in Project A (1983). Jackie returned to the United States twice as an actor, in Cannonball Run 2 and the Protector, before the New York Film Festival honoured him for Police Story (1986).
